December eNewsletter - November 7th & 8th Surgery Weekend Report
During Fresh Start’s November 2009 Surgery Weekend, co-sponsored by Imaging Healthcare Specialists, The Louis and Harold Price Foundation, The Integra Foundation, and Patterson Foundation, 48 children and young adults from the U.S. and all over the world received free reconstructive surgery, medical consultations, laser treatments, dental services and speech therapy from 66 volunteers.

One of the patients to receive services at the November Surgery Weekend was Daniel. At 8 years old Daniel was brutally attacked by a dog resulting in severe scaring and deformation of his ears and face. Now six years after the attack Daniel received his stage 3 ear reconstruction and will continue with Fresh Start until his best possible outcome has been reached.
The positive impact that Fresh Start has had on Daniel is undeniable. As the patient speaker at this year's Butterfly Ball Daniel shared his gratitude and experiences with an audience of over 200 guests with confidence and poise.

Another Patient at the November Surgery Weekend was Beatriz. Beatriz is a long term patient, now 22 years old, who was born with a facial deformity that required extensive treatment. She has truly transformed into a bright and beautiful individual.
This time she had an evaluation in preparation for her lower lip scar revision that will take place at the January Surgery Weekend. |
10 reconstructive surgeons and 4 anesthesiologists teamed with 85 other volunteers including registered nurses, interpreters, drivers, and speech-language pathologists to provide fresh starts to children with physical deformities. 27 new volunteers were added to Fresh Start's Surgery Weekend team.

Fresh Start provided 40 reconstructive surgery procedures, 13 other procedures (V-Beam, Scar Revisions, and Laser Hair Removal), 74 dental treatments, 7 speech therapy treatments, and 29 evaluations and consultations. The total value of the donated services was over $159,826 for November's Surgery Weekend and Dental Clinic. November's Surgery Weekend totals brought donated medical services to over $17,112,000 since Fresh Start's incorporation in 1991!
All medical services, transportation, food and lodging, are provided free to eligible patient families. Some of the procedures performed were microtia repair for underdeveloped ears, skin grafting for burn trauma, cleft lip repair, pinning back protruding ears, and scar revisions.
